Jeep: A Look Back
The Jeep brand has been linked to freedom and adventure for more than 80 years. However, when we talk about freedom, we’re not just talking about how Jeep vehicles allow you to feel the freedom of the open road or blaze a trail through the wilderness. No, we’re talking about the 1940s, when the original Willys MB took to the frontlines to help the US Army transport goods and soldiers through treacherous terrain. The bond that was forged during that time led to the first civilian Jeep—the CJ—and America’s first all-steel station wagon, the Model 463 Jeep. The Overland, Jeep's first truck, followed those vehicles to close out the decade. By the time the 1940s ended, it was clear the Jeep brand was here to stay.
Speaking of the Jeep brand, Willys-Overland registered the word "Jeep" as a trademark in 1950. A few years later, the company was sold to Kaiser Motors. With this transfer happening in the background, Jeep enthusiasts started gathering at Jeep Jamborees, and the feeling of community that still exists today between Jeep owners was off and running. The change of ownership didn’t stop the brand from introducing seven new models, including the CJ-3B, which was a reboot of the CJ, offering drivers more power to go where they’d never gone before. Following that, the CJ-5 debuted in 1955 with an increased wheelbase and more off-road capabilities. One glance at the CJ-5 makes it clear where the Wrangler design came from.
Innovative design continued as the 1950s slid into the 1960s, bringing with it an increased focus on vehicles that dominated both work and play. The brand introduced new family-oriented vehicles, such as the Jeep Wagoneer, which offered the first automatic transmission and independent suspension in a 4x4 vehicle. A little over ten years later, the Wagoneer was one of the first vehicles to sport the new Quadra-Trac 4x4 system, which is still going strong today. The 1960s also saw the first Gladiator truck, which shared the same platform as the Wagoneer.
During the ensuing decades, Jeep went through a few different owners. Kaiser was bought out by AMC in 1971, which was in turn purchased by Chrysler in 1987. Despite this shake-up, Jeep continued to set new standards in the 1990s, masterfully finding the right blend of functionality, on-road and off-road capabilities, safety, and comfort. The 1990s saw the end of the classic Grand Wagoneer as the brand introduced the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not only did the Grand Cherokee arrive in style, it was the first SUV equipped with a driver-side airbag. That and its focus on performance, responsive handling, and comfort earned it a long list of awards, including MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year.
The 2000s saw more new models following the merger of Chrysler and Daimler-Benz in 1998. One of those new models was the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which the company hailed as its most capable model to date. Additionally, the Wrangler took on a new look, showing off four instead of two doors. Last but not least, the Compass and Patriot entered the field as the first Jeep models in the growing crossover SUV segment. These were soon followed by additional options like the Renegade and the revived Cherokee.
Since then, Jeep has continued to push the boundaries, delivering vehicles that answer drivers’ need for adventure while also getting them from point A to point B with ease. New technology, safety features, and more keep Jeep at the top of its game, and it doesn’t look like that will stop anytime soon.
